Several vehicles were involved in two separate pileups on I-57 Thursday night near southwest suburban Peotone

Several vehicles were involved in a massive pileup on I-57 Thursday night near southwest suburban Peotone.

According to the Illinois State Police, the chain-reaction crashes occurred around 4:40 p.m. near  mile post 332 and 333.

Seven tractor semi-trailers and approximately 12 passenger vehicles were involved in the pileup.

At least one semi caught on fire, but police say no hazardous material were involved.

One car had to be extricated from underneath a semi by emergency crews.

Ten people were taken to area hospitals with non life-threatening injuries.

Both lanes sides of the interstate were closed for several hours following the crash. The southbound lanes reopened first, and as of 9:30 p.m., the left lanes on the northbound side had reopened.

Low visibility due to the fog is blamed for the crashes.
