Residents Displaced After Storms Tear Roof Off Suburban Apartment Building

An apartment building in DuPage County was evacuated Tuesday afternoon and several residents displaced after the roof of the building was torn off during strong storms.

The DuPage County Sheriff’s office said the building at the Hinsdale Lake Terrace Apartments, located at 16w580 Honeysuckle Rose Lane in unincorporated Willowbrook, was being evacuated just before 3 p.m.

The sheriff’s office received a call that the roof of the building had blown off due to severe weather in the area.

"I looked to the sky and all I seen was the sky and I thought I was dreaming," said resident Niquan Candler. "I thought, 'Wow, this is really happening.'"

No injuries were reported, but residents of the 32-unit building were displaced, officials said.

Many apartments were so damaged, residents were unable to recover much of their belongings.

"My son's got trophies, he was valedictorian of his school," said Suzanne Fulk. "Who's going to replace all that stuff?"

"Hard ain't even the word," said Melissa Fields. "It's devastating. It's devastating, it's too much."

Managers for the apartment complex declined to comment. Authorities expect residents can return to the building within a few days.
