Cold Front Sweeps Chicago Area

After days of unseasonably warm temperatures, Tuesday officially marked the start of jacket season

A powerful cold front swept the Chicago area Tuesday, bringing strong winds with the potential for high waves and flooding along the lakefront.

After days of unseasonably warm temperatures, Tuesday officially marked the start of jacket season, hovering in the 60s all day – a massive 15 dip from Monday’s high of 79 degrees.

Skies will remain overcast and cloudy, seeing periods of light drizzles of rain. Gusts of wind will travel upwards of 35 mph, creating large whitecaps over Lake Michigan.

Waves near the shoreline could approach as high as 10 feet, creating the danger of flooding along the roadways and bike paths.

The National Weather Service warned of hazardous swim conditions and minor shore inundation near Ohio, Oak, Fullerton and 63rd Street beaches in Cook County, as well as the shores prone to flooding in Lake County, Indiana.

Later into the evening hours, temperatures will fall into the 50s. During the overnight hours, skies will partially clear as the night continues to chill the air. The area’s coolest inland locations are expected to drop into the 40s.

Again on Wednesday temperatures will be quite cool, in the low 60s, and overcast with gusty winds and scattered rain showers.
