The Pothole That Ate Chicago

DePaul University student Taylor Tucker tried to pull his disabled car off of Lake Shore Drive just north of the Fullerton Avenue off-ramp, but he found the area crowded with at least 20 other cars suffering the same malady as his.

Potholeatosis. His tire was destroyed.

He, like dozens of other drivers going southbound on the Drive Sunday, found himself caught off-guard as his car approached a giant pothole between the Fullerton and Belmont avenue exits.

"City crews were out today during breaks in the rain to fill potholes, but Lake Shore Drive was the only emergency repair crews handled today," the Chicago Tribune quoted CDOT spokesman Brian Steele as saying.

Although the city has been plagued with potholes in recent weeks, and the frequent freezing and thawing of March breeds the road hazards, potholes on the Drive can cause more damage because vehicles travel at higher speeds than on other city streets, the paper said.
