RTA Chairman John Gates Jr. to Step Down: Report

Regional Transportation Authority chairman John Gates Jr. will tell colleagues he plans to step down from the agency at the end of his term this summer, according to a published report.

The Chicago Tribune said the 60-year-old wants to devote more time to his business, private-sector commitments such as the executive board of Lurie Children's Hospital and to his family.

Gates for four years has been the head of the transit agency that oversees Metra, Pace and the Chicago Transit Authority.

He didn't mince words in November when discussing Ventra, the CTA's next-generation fare payment system, calling it an "unacceptable and systemic failure." And in September he pointed out problems with efficiency and purchasing as it relates to the three transporation agencies.
