The Illinois Tollway is going to court to try to recoup thousands of dollars in unpaid tolls from its biggest offenders.
Lawsuits target a Sandwich plumbing company with more than $60,000 in unpaid tolls and fines, a Maywood day care center that owes more than $19,000 and a Streamwood trucking company that hasn't paid $152,000, according to the Chicago Tribune.
The tollway is taking those companies and dozens of other scofflaws to court to force them to pay the $1.8 million they owed at last count.
Tollway Executive Director Kristi Lafleur says her agency has no choice other than taking chronic violators to court. She says that sends them a "clear and strong message" that the tollway bills aren't going to go away.
