Driver Killed When Cement Truck Flips on Bishop Ford

Ramp at 111th street closed in both directions

A cement truck flipped over as it was exiting the Bishop Ford Freeway on Thursday afternoon, causing wet cement to spill onto the 111th Street ramp and killing the driver.

The concrete mixer truck was southbound on the Bishop Ford and exiting on the westbound 111th Street ramp when it struck a compact van and rolled over shortly before 1 p.m. Thursday,  according to Illinois State Police District Chicago Master Sgt. S. Nowak.

The 59-year-old driver of the Ozinga cement mixer truck was pinned in and rescued by firefighters.  He was taken to Roseland Community Hospital where he was pronounced dead, said Fire Media spokesman Quention Curtis.

His identity has not yet been released, but he is believed to be from Chicago, police said.

The driver of the van suffered only minor injuries.

The truck lost its load of wet cement on the ramp, forcing the 111th Street to be closed in both directions.
