Metra Train Fatally Strikes Pedestrian Near Elmwood Park

All inbound and outbound Metra trains were temporarily halted near suburban Elmwood Park after a train hit and killed a pedestrian.

The accident happened on Metra's Milwaukee District West Line, just east of the Elmwood Park station at 73rd Ave when train No. 2225 hit a person.

Both the North Central and Milwaukee lines were affected, with trains beginning to move again shortly before 6:30 p.m.

Passengers should expect extensive delays, according to a Metra spokesperson.

An elderly man was struck by the train, a witness told NBC 5. He walked with a cane and tried to go around the gates as they were already down, he said. He made it through the first gate but was clipped by the train before he could get past the second, according to the witness.

The victim's identity was not immediately available.
