Metra officials expect service to be fully operational in time for Tuesday morning's rush hour following a crash involving a train and a semi-truck.
It happened shortly after 3:30 p.m. in suburban Bartlett at the Western Avenue crossing.
Train #2242 struck the semi-truck, which was carrying a load of new cars, and dragged it around 100 feet east on the Milwaukee District/West line.
"It was like a big initial bang and then you just heard a whole bunch of ... you just knew something was getting tore up, you knew it was a train accident at that point, it was horrific," said David Olson, who witnessed the aftermath of the accident.
Two passengers on the train suffered minor injuries in the crash, which occured near the Bartlett station.
The truck driver was not injured in the crash.
The Western Avenue crossing is not considered high risk or high volume, but investigators believe the truck driver became confused trying to navigate Bartlett's small streets where large trucks are not allowed.
Inbound and outbound service was stopped in both directions following the crash, but service resumed as the night wore on. As of 11 p.m., only one of the train cars remained on the track.
The train was traveling east toward Chicago when the accident happened. Several cars in parking lots near the crash scene were also damaged.
