Six people were injured early Friday in a crash involving at least 10 vehicles on the Stevenson Expressway.

The accident happened around 3:40 a.m. on the northbound lanes of I-55 just south of First Avenue near southwest suburban Summit.

Illinois State Police said the chain-reaction crash happened after the driver of a semi truck involved in the accident fell asleep.

Officials said six people were transported to area hospitals with non-life threatening injuries. Two people, including a woman who had to be extricated from a vehicle, were taken to Loyola University Medical Center, two others were taken to LaGrange Memorial Hospital and two were taken to MacNeal Hospital. Their conditions were not immediately known.

Nine others refused treatment at the scene.

All inbound lanes of I-55 at First Avenue were shut down as of 5 a.m. because of the crash. The lanes were reopened around 6 a.m.

Authorities said more than 10 vehicles, including a semi, were involved in the crash. Several ambulances were called to the scene.
