IDOT Considers Adding Toll Lanes to Stevenson Expressway

Commuters on the Stevenson Expressway may soon have the option of choosing between sitting in traffic and paying for access to faster express lanes.

The Illinois Department of Transportation is studying the possibility of adding “managed lanes” to the median of Interstate 55 between I- 355 and I-90/94. The proposal would add one lane in each direction that could become an express toll lane, a high occupancy toll lane or a congestion priced lane.

The proposal is aimed at helping to ease the flow of traffic for the projected 2040 travel demand.

IDOT says the I-55 Managed Lane Project began in April 2012 was expected to take two years to complete. The study is currently still in its first phase.

An open house public meeting about the project is scheduled for Dec. 9 at the Holiday Inn Countryside Conference Center in Countryside.
