Fiery Semi Crash Closes Parts of I-57

The northbound lanes of Interstate 57 on Chicago’s South Side were closed Wednesday morning after a semi crashed and burst into flames.

Police said the incident took place around 2:25 a.m. near Wentworth Avenue and shut down all northbound lanes at Wentworth. As of 4:50 a.m. traffic was moving through the area with at least one lane remaining closed for crews to clean the wreckage.

The semi is believed to have hit a barrier and jack-knifed, but the cause of the crash remained under investigation, officials said.

Sanding trucks were called to the scene due to a fuel spill.

The extent of the driver’s injuries was not immediately known following the crash.
