If a Chicago alderman gets her way, bicyclists would no longer be permitted to talk on cell phones or text while they're riding.
Ald. Margaret Laurino (39th) proposed an ordinance in the City Council prohibiting bikers from using a communications device, such as a cell phone, PDA or portable computer while they are riding, according to the Sun-Times.
Bikers would have to follow rules similar to those imposed on drivers of motor vehicles, Laurino said. Chicago law says drivers are forbidden from talking on a cell phone unless they're using a hands-free device.
Laurino told the Sun-Times the proposed law targets distracted drivers, "no matter what you're driving." She said she wants to make the streets safer for motorists, bicyclists and pedestrians.
If the City Council approves the ordinance, violators would face a $50 fine. If the violation happens during a traffic accident, the fine increases to $500.
