Whether your summers usually consist of entertaining with friends, a house full of kids or just stolen moments of relaxation (much like the rest of the year), you can make your home somewhere you and your family will want to hang out just by utilizing a few easy, inexpensive decorating tips. Interior designer Michelle Rohrer-Lauer of Grayslake-based Michelle's Interiors offers suggestions on creating a resort feel in your home for your summer staycation this year.
First of all, give your bedroom and bathroom some TLC, as these are the places you can really relax and regroup. Create the essence of a spa retreat with remodeling ideas like heated floors and updated showers. In the bedroom, simple changes such as new bed linens in calm, comforting colors can make a big difference in your mindset.
Rohrer-Lauer has some fun entertaining ideas for summer staycations, as well. Host a cooking party for you and your friends by asking people to bring over recipes. Switch up the recipes among your guests, and set up cooking stations throughout your kitchen. (Bring in an island or a long table if needed.) Utilize bright, welcoming linens, flowers and table decor in both the kitchen and dining area so that guests can move from preparing the meal to enjoying it seamlessly.
And, finally, if you have kids to keep busy all summer, create a home theater environment in your family room. Add plenty of comfortable accessories, such as large, fluffy pillows and cozy throws to encourage kids to hang out. You can even affix pillows to a coffee table or a padded ottoman to add seating for large groups. For a dash of flair, use a large piece of fabric with rod pockets sewn in to make an official theater curtain for in front of the TV. Throw in a candy station with all of the traditional movie theater treats, plus personalized popcorn bowls and bags, and your kids will be set for the day.
