When it comes to updates for the new year, don't neglect your surroundings. By referencing some of the latest trends in home decor, you can give your house a fresh start for 2009. Here are some tips from interior designer Michelle Rohrer-Lauer of Michelle's Interiors to get you inspired and in style.

Rohrer-Lauer is predicting four big interior design trends for the new year. Each are easily achieved by choosing accessories and furnishings that fall into one of the following categories:

Safari style: Using animal prints sparingly is a fun way to add texture and timeless panache. Use textiles balanced by organic, natural colors for a surprisingly elegant look.

Hollywood glamour: The luxurious look of old Hollywood in always in vogue. Focus on plush fabrics with rich finishes and accessories with clean lines made from elegant materials.

Classic-meets-modern: If your personal aesthetic veers toward the time-tested appeal of traditional furnishings, update your look with bold colors and patterns. By building on the basics, you can create a more individual look with clever accessories and mixing and matching.

Going green: Not (necessarily) as a color choice, but as a push to become more eco-friendly, the green movement has gone beyond a fad. If you're planning on making some updates to your home, now is a good time to consider environmentally sound materials, finishes and installation techniques.
