Last Meal for Don Roth's Blackhawk

Don Roth's Blackhawk Closes New Year's Eve

The end of the decade is bringing the end of famed local restaurant Blackhawk.

After 40 years in the village, Don Roth's Blackhawk is closing, ending a line of restaurants launched by the family in 1938.

"The outpouring of people has been phenomenal," owner Ann Roth told the Chicago Tribune Thursday morning. "People have had such beautiful, beautiful memories. It is heartwarming to hear these stories."

Roth, who is "pushing 90," announced the closure last month.  Her husband, after whom the restaurant is named, died six years ago.

"With none of my children choosing to run the business, ... 40 great years here were really quite enough for me," she said at the time.

The steak house, at 61 N. Milwaukee Ave. was known for a signature dish, the "spinning salad bowl," in which servers poured a house dressing over a spinning bowl of greens.

While the restaurant is closing, that Spinning Bowl Salad Dressing will continue to be sold.  Sunset Foods, DJ's in Glencoe, Grand Food Center in Winnetka, and select Dominick's and Jewel stores will continue to carry it, according the restaurant's Web site.
