Propane Explosion Rocks Chicago Riverwalk

No serious injuries reported; chef was concerned about cigars

Four were hospitalized, but no one -- including the chef -- was critically injured after a propane explosion at Cyrano's Cafe on Chicago's Riverwalk Wednesday morning.

The cafe's owner, Didier Durand, said the chef called from Northwestern Memorial Hospital to say that he was OK.

"He was worried that his cigars got burned," Durand said.

Durand and his wife, Jamie Pellar said the explosion at the cafe, at 233 E. Lower Wacker Dr., shattered windows, charred kitchen equipment and a destroyed wooden bench, but said things could have been much worse.

"We are lucky," Pellar said. "We have been blessed."

The couple credited the quick actions of the crew of Chicago’s Fair Lady, a boat docked next to Cyrano’s that is part of the Chicago’s First Lady fleet.

Durand Pellar said they hoped they'd be able to reopen in about a week.
