The free chicken saga turns into a cockfight, with El Pollo Loco thinking outside the bucket and ruffling the feathers of a wounded KFC.

It hasn't been a good PR week for KFC. Who hasn't seen the videos this week of disappointed grilled chicken lovers who downloaded the free coupon from Oprah's site, and were turned away at KFCs?

Well, KFC's loss appears to be El Pollo Loco's gain.  The chain -- which locally has an Uptown location -- announced this week that it will accept the coupons that KFC started denying its customers this week.

An internet coupon for free grilled chicken from KFC has turned into a debacle in Chicago and across the country.

The restaurant is also taking it one step further, extending the promotion to Mother's Day, which the KFC coupons were not supposed to be good for.

KFC's recent troubles must have been like manna from heaven for El Pollo Loco, who had already been blitzing the airwaves with a taste test challenge against KFC's new grilled chicken.

In a video released by El Pollo Loco this week, the restaurant asks "Does KFC have something against mothers?"

Ouch. Talk about choking a chicken when it's down.
