Hard Times for Hard Liquor Biz

Economy Claims South Loop Sam's Liquor

They say liquor sales are immune to an economic downturn, but that's not the case for a South Loop liquor giant that's leaving its customers crying in their beer.

The large Sam's Wines & Spirits on the corner of Roosevelt and Wabash is closing its doors on Sunday after two years in operation.

According to an email from Sam's president Richard DiStasio, the bad economy is to blame.

"Although there was initial excitement surrounding the development of the South Loop area, the downturn in the economy combined with the lack of expected growth has forced us to re-evaluate our presence as a retailer in the area," DiStasio wrote.

The store had two levels of merchandise, along with a wine cafe for locals to congregate and socialize.

A rooftop patio was never utilized at the store, due to problems with zoning permits, employees told NBCChicago.com.

Sam's will continue to operate a flagship Lincoln Park store at 1720 N. Marcey St.
