Chicago Spot Named Best Cocktail Lounge in America

The Drawing Room honored by Nightclub & Bar magazine

There was more toasting and celebrating than usual over the weekend at Gold Coast hot spot "The Drawing Room."

That's because respected industry magazine Nightclub & Bar named the the ultra-posh lounge/restaurant the Cocktail Lounge of the Year.

The winners will be honored at a VIP celebration during the 2010 Nightclub & Bar Convention and Trade Show in Las Vegas next month.

Owner Matt Linder, who opened The Drawing Room in 2007, credits the win to his employees, including Charles Joly who was named a finalist for Bartender of the Year in the same competition.

"Our mixologists are the best. Two have consulting companies and literally travel the world doing this. Their presentation and and detail blend perfectly with the atmosphere and food," Linder said.

The cocktail menu is split between classic pre-Prohibition drinks like Old Fashioneds and Manhattans, and newer libations. In other words, don't go there looking for a Sex in the City-style Cosmo.

"We stick to the classic spirits, like gin and whiskey. You won't even find vodka on this menu," Linder said.

The magazine collected 230 nominations in 14 categories. The only other Chicago finalist was the Pink Monkey, which was named in the Ultra-Lounge of the Year category.
