A dream came true for Chicago designer Borris Powell after his dress was featured prominently at the Oscars Sunday.

Powell won the Academy Awards Oscars Designer Challenge, a competition where designers from all over the country compete to have their dress featured during the ceremony.

"I just started screaming like a little baby. It was so magical," Powell said of the moment he found out that he had won. "It was a memorable part of my life that I'll never forget."

Powell and his dress, Black Swan, was featured during the Oscars red carpet show on ABC, and worn by Brazilian model Izabela Garcia, who he was paired with at the beginning of the competition.

"It was so amazing the chemistry we had. We looked at each other from day one and she said, 'We got this.' That's the very first thing she said when she put the dress on," Powell said.

The dress was featured prominently throughout the ceremony, worn by one of the models who brought the Oscar statuettes on stage.

Powell beat out nine other designers in the final round, including two others from Chicago -- Miriam Cecilia Carlson, who's part of the Chicago Fashion Incubator and James De Colon.

"Just to be there in the middle of that and seeing all the actor and actresses receiving their awards, and just being there with people who really appreciate what I do was so surreal," Powell said.

Powell is presenting his Fall/Winter 2011 Collection "C me N Dior" on March 11 at the Sheraton Hotel in Chicago. Log on to Web site for ticket information.
