If flowers or a hand-made card just won’t cut it this Mother’s Day this year, up the ante and go for something a little more impressive in the gift department. These ideas will make mom remember why she spent so many years dealing with your annoying attitude after all.

A NEW TWIST ON COOKING: Spending time with mom is really all she wants at the end of the day (well, in most cases), so why not put in some mileage by signing both of you up for a cooking class? Book a culinary demonstration and hands-on cooking session at Parties that Cook. From 10:30 a.m.-1 p.m. on May 9, skip the long brunch lines and whip up some gourmet recipes with Mom at Kitchen Chicago (324 N. Leavitt). Sip mimosas and listen to live music while you learn to craft Pancetta Wrapped Dried Plums Filled with Blue Cheese with Balsamic-Honey Glaze and more. Tickets are $75 and can be purchased here.

WORK OUT AND CHILLAX: If cooking in the kitchen isn’t mom's idea of a relaxing day (hello, she’s already a slave to the stove!), treat her to a little day of wellness at the Spa @ Equinox. Hook her up with a spa session and join her for a free workout beforehand so she can keep her svelte shape. Choose from special packages like the “Because I Said So” (50-min massage and 50-min facial) or “The Mother Lode,” a three-pack of 50-min massages. If you’re on a budget, the “Stand Up Straight” massage is only $79.

WATCH AN EXPERT DO THE WORK: If Mom’s a foodie, C-House is hosting a Mother’s Day dinner that just might fit the bill. Chef Nicole is bringing in her own mom from Texas to host a special meal complete with recipes inspired by their family traditions and Midwestern roots. It kicks off at 6 p.m. on May 9 with passed apps in the lounge, followed by a three-course, family style dinner.

So much better than watching flowers die after three days.
