TheWit to Unveil Retractable Roof

7,000-square-foot 27th floor rooftop bar and lounge to be utilized year round

Rooftop culture is one of the things that makes Chicago nightlife great. Problem is, you can only enjoy it for a paltry few months out of the year.

Roof on theWit Hotel -- a 7,000-square-foot rooftop bar and lounge on the 27th floor of the State Street hotel -- has addressed that issue by building a retractable roof, just in time for the spring and summer outdoor party season.

Helicopters and cranes were utilized to install the all-glass retractable roof, which measures 30-feet wide and 21-feet tall. The L-tracks surrounding the hotel made the use of standard cranes impossible, forcing engineers to construct a crane piece by piece on the rooftop patio itself.

An LED light system as also been added to the enclosure, creating a dramatic nightclub atmosphere.

The new retractable roof means the facility can also stay open later than usual, because most outdoor seating must close at an earlier hour.

The new addition to ROOF will be unveiled in May 9.
