Chicago's Brazilians Celebrate Independence
Moshpix: Chicago's Brazilian community may be thousands of miles away from the homeland, but the native spirit is alive and well, as evidenced by the turnout at Logan Square Auditorium for the Brazilian Independence Day Festival. The event, hosted by Chicago Samba, featured dance lessons, a Capoeira presentation, authentic Brazilian food, live music and a show featuring costumes from 2011's Brazilian carnival. Independence Day is a national holiday observed in Brazil on September 7 of every year and celebrates Brazil's Declaration of Independence from Portugal in 1822.
