Pedestrians struck, killed at rate of more than one-a-day in Chicago

Walking in Chicago is becoming more dangerous.

It was named the fourth most walkable large city in 2008, but with pedestrian deaths on the rise in Chicago, the Walk Score title is in serious jeopardy.
Despite increased safety measures such as red-light cameras, countdown signals and crosswalk awareness initiatives, 56 pedestrian were struck and killed on city streets, up from 49 deaths in 2007 and 48 in 2006.
Chicago Department of Transportation spokesman Brian Steele pointed to an increase in pedestrians in Chicago, adding that "the most difficult part of this is changing driver behavior."
