The popularity of "Guitar Hero" has a lot of kids excited about the guitar again, and a new outreach program is offering free after-school lessons.

James R. Doolittle School offers the program to interested 5th through 8th grade students.

The New Young Guitarists Program is being provided by VanderCook College of Music and will run for 15 weeks at Doolittle, with recitals planned for Saturday, at 4pm, on the campus of VanderCook.

The hope is that the excitement that students feel about learning the instrument will translate to excitement in learning about math, history and reading.
