Funeral and visitation services have been set for the "Queen of the Blues," Koko Taylor. The 80-year-old singer died Wednesday at Northwestern Memorial Hospital following surgery for gastrointestinal bleeding.
Visitation will be from 4 to 9 p.m. Thursday and 4 to 6 p.m. Friday. Funeral services will Friday at 6 p.m. All services will be held at the Rainbow PUSH Coalition National Headquarters, according to a statement from Taylor's record label, Alligator Records.
Though her name was synonymous with Chicago, Taylor was born in Tennessee in 1928. She moved to the Windy City during her 20s. In 1963, arranger/composer Willie Dixon heard her in a Chicago club, got her a recording contract and six Grammy nominations later, she embodied her moniker, "Queen of the Blues."
“That’s what I want the world to know: Koko Taylor is a blues singer, no more and no less,” she said in a recent interview.
