Bike Chicago 2009 kicked off this morning with a Bike Rally and Media Challenge race. Bike Chicago 2009 is presented by the Mayor’s Office of Special Events.
First, bikers geared up for the "Bike v. Gas Guzzler" car race, also known as the Media Challenge, which began at the United Center and finished on Daley Plaza. Crowds once again witnessed a repeat of 2008 as the bike triumphed over the car.
The winner of the Media Challenge was NBC 5 Sports anchor and reporter Mike Adamle.
Mike received the Darrian Chapman award, named in memory of NBC 5 sports and biking enthusiast Darrian Chapman, who passed away unexpectedly in 2002.
This morning’s rally kicked off Bike to Work week, encouraging all commuters to hop on their bike for all or part of their commute.
“You wallet and waistline will thank you,” Bike Chicago press releases said.
And if that’s not incentive enough, they promise you caffeine. Bicycle Commuter Stations at local Metra stations will offer coffee and tire checks.
The Bike Chicago festivities take place until 7 p.m. tonight on Daley Plaza with other activities continuing through the month.
There are over 100 biking events to participate in this summer and fall, so get your tires filled and get out there.
