The NBCUniversal Foundation on Wednesday awarded $100,000 in grants to four local non-profit organizations helping to improve public secondary education in the Chicago area.

"We take our role of serving the Chicago community seriously," said Larry Wert, President of the Central and Western Regions for the NBC Owned Television Stations, which includes NBC5. "We are proud to support each of these organizations, which are all focused on ensuring a bright future for the youth of Chicago.”

The sixth annual NBCUniversal initiative supports select non-profit organizations in cities with large employee populations and significant education needs. A total of $800,000 in grants also was announced in New York, Los Angeles, Dallas, Miami and Washington, D.C.

Since the Foundation’s inception, nearly $7 million has been directed to non-profits across the country, including more than $600,000 in Chicago. The organizations chosen demonstrate a commitment to improving educational opportunities for public school students.

"By partnering with these organizations in Chicago, we are making an important investment in the futures of the young members of our community,” said Celia Chavez, President and General Manager of WSNS-TV/Telemundo Chicago.
