For Father's Day I wanted to have a little fun and give dad permission to be an official 'couch potato' at least one day out of the year. So, I put together what I call "The Daddy Caddy", a toy box for dad full of all the things he would need to sit back on the couch and relax in front of the TV for as long as he likes.
I started by getting a canvas tote from my local housewares store. Then, I shopped around for a variety of different inserts, racks and containers that would fit inside of it. I thought it would be great to get individual containers for remote controls, a cell phone and cordless phone, as well as for different types of food and snacks. Even though some of the containers were designed for specific uses, like an office desktop or the shower, I combined them all for different uses in my caddy so dad would have a place for everything he'd need. The fun of creating this is that you can take your time and customize it just the way the dad in your life would use it. It's also a fun project to do with the kids.
Once you've selected all the containers for your caddy, fill it up and let dad enjoy it. If you're a little handy with power tools or if dad wants to customize his caddy a bit further after the fact, consider making a base for the tote and attaching casters to make everything mobile. The base I made is simply a rectangular piece of wood the same size as the tote with four sides attached to hold it in place. I picked up casters at my local home center store and attached them with wood screws.
