Shaving Lady Causes Crash in Keys

Trooper: "If I wasn't there, I wouldn't have believed it"

There were about a Brazilian things wrong about the circumstances of a crash on Cudjoe Key. Officers investigating a crash probably wished the responsible party were texting while driving.

Or applying makeup.

Or talking on a cell phone.

Or anything but what Megan Mariah Barnes was actually doing when she caused a two-car crash on Cudjoe Key last week.

That's because Barnes was shaving. And it wasn't her legs.

Not only was Barnes driving illegally, having lost her license the day before when she was convicted of DUI with a prior in an Upper Keys court, but she was shaving her bikini line while her ex-husband steered from the passenger seat.

The two were on their way to Key West, where Barnes planned to meet a date.

Near mile marker 21 on Highway 1, Barnes' Thunderbird struck a pickup in front of her in the road, causing minor injuries to three passengers inside. Barnes and her ex kept driving, at one point pulling over to switch places so that Barnes wouldn't appear to have been behind the wheel.

But when cops caught up, burns on her ex-husband's chest from the passenger door airbag deployment suggested otherwise, and the truth came out.

"She said she was meeting her boyfriend in Key West and wanted to be 'ready for the visit,'" Trooper Gary Dunick told The Citizen. "If I wasn't there, I wouldn't have believed it."

"About 10 years ago I stopped a guy in the exact same spot...who had three or four syringes sticking out of his arm. It was just surreal and I thought, 'Nothing will ever beat this,'" Dunnick said. "Well, this takes it."
