NJ Man Accused of Carrying Cocaine Inside Amplifier at JFK Airport

Officials say a New Jersey man was arrested last week at Kennedy International Airport after he was discovered carrying a kilogram of cocaine inside a stereo amplifier.

A Port Authority of New York and New Jersey Police spokesman says Jose Rodrigues of Fort Lee, New Jersey, was arrested at Terminal 4 on Jan. 28.

A Transportation Security Administration spokesman says screeners noticed something suspicious in the 58-year-old man's carry-on bag and summoned officers.

That's when a Port Authority police officer discovered a speaker had been gutted, lined with lead foil to avoid detection and stuffed with slightly more than one kilogram of cocaine.

He's been charged with felony criminal possession of a controlled substance. Attorney information wasn't immediately available.

Rodrigues was flying from JFK to the Dominican Republic.
