Tuesday marks the celebration of National Cat Day, as cat lovers everywhere are encouraged to show some support and unconditional love for their feline friends.
National Cat Day was founded in 2005 by pet lifestyle expert and animal welfare advocate Colleen Page, according to the National Cat Day website. It's intended to be not only a day of extra TLC for purring friends but also a day to bring awareness to the many cats in shelters nationwide who need adopting.
Four million cats enter shelters every year, with one to two million eventually euthanized, according to the website. The goal of the day's designation, in partnership with the Animal Miracle Foundation, is to facilitate 10,000 shelter cat adoptions by day's end.
National Cat Day also encourages kitty enthusiasts to buy Cat Day tees from its online store. If you aren't already scanning it for your "Certifiably Frisky" T-shirt or becoming the "Queen of Cats," here are some fun facts for all you fluff fiends, courtesy of Animal Planet:
- Cats can sleep up to 16 hours every day.
- Cats spend one third of their waking hours cleaning themselves.
- In North America, cats are actually a more popular pet than dogs. There are nearly 73 million cats, compared with 63 million dogs, kept as household pets.
