Man Shoots Self in Leg at Boy Scout Meeting

Authorities say a retired Chicago police officer accidentally shot himself in the leg when he dropped a bag containing his handgun as a Boy Scout troop meeting dispersed at a suburban school.

The Daily Herald  cites Des Plaines Police Chief William Kushner as saying Wednesday it discharged as it fell on its hammer.

It happened at Iroquois Community School Monday night, hours after the school day ended. Troop 38 Scoutmaster Bryan Hedstrom says most scouts had already left the meeting. Nobody else was injured.

Kushner says the man is licensed to carry a concealed gun and didn't break any laws. He'd apparently been visiting his grandson's troop meeting.

School principal Michael Amadei said an in email to parents the man's injuries aren't as serious as initially thought.
