Sears is moving into the digital age.

The company that started out as a catalog business is now embracing Facebook as a marketplace.

The Hoffman Estates-based company launched a new “Back-to-School” shopping site called Campus Ready and it’s accessible via Facebook.

“Our Campus Ready program allows Sears to connect directly with students,” Don Hamblen, Sears’ chief marketing officer told Crain's Chicago. “It’s all grounded in great product assortment, in style and fashion. Building on that, it’s in the latest context that adds value and speaks to the target audience, which is kids.”

The retailer is trying to get a jump on makes for its second biggest shopping season behind Christmas.

The Campus Ready site, which can be found various ways including www.facebook.com/campusready and www.sears.com/campus, has plenty of functionality. It allows students to sign up for a gift registry, or design a dorm room online.
