Facebook Now Includes Civil Unions

There is a new way to list your relationship status on Facebook. The act, which is performed by the click of a mouse, is known as becoming "Facebook official."

Thursday the Palo Alto-based company added domestic partnerships and civil unions in its drop-down menu. Those options are in addition to single, engaged, married, widowed, etc.

Members of GLAAD (Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation) couldn't be happier. They said they pushed Facebook to make the change.

"Today, Facebook sent a clear message in support of gay and lesbian couples to users across the globe," said GLAAD President Jarrett Barrios. "By acknowledging the relationships of countless loving and committed same-sex couples in the U.S. and abroad, Facebook has set a new standard of inclusion for social media."

It's worth noting that Facebook wasn't stopping anyone from listing "married" as a status no matter the sex of their partner.

Also of note: the new choices are only available in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, France and Australia.
