Cubs Nearing Contract With Top-End Reliever, Reports Say

The Chicago Cubs will likely have a new closer next season, as they are nearing a contract with one of the most coveted relievers on the market.

According to multiple reports, the Cubs are nearing a deal with free agent reliever Brandon Morrow. FanRag Sports’ Jon Heyman reports that the Cubs will have a deal with Morrow, and that it will be in the $10-to-$11 million per season range.

Yahoo's Jeff Passan reports that the deal will be for two years, with an option for a third season.

In 45 appearances last season with the Los Angeles Dodgers, Morrow gave up zero home runs and walked just nine batters while striking out 50. He posted a 2.06 ERA with the Dodgers, and gave up just one hit in four appearances against the Cubs in the NLCS a season ago.

If Morrow officially signs the deal, then it would probably spell the end of the line for Wade Davis in Chicago. The reliever is arguably the top closer available on the market, and the Cubs likely wouldn’t give two relievers contracts worth more than $10 million per season if they end up signing Morrow.

Even with that addition, the Cubs will still need more bullpen help, as Hector Rondon was non-tendered and pitchers like Pedro Strop and Carl Edwards Jr. struggled at times last season.
