After a long and unwieldly process, Jay Cutler is officially a Chicago Bear. The Chicago Sun-Times' Mike Mulligan has the story:
The Bears acquired quarterback Jay Cutler today for No. 1 draft picks in 2009 and 2010, a No. 3 pick this year and Kyle Orton, the Sun-Times has learned. The Bears receive the Broncos' fifth-round draft pick this year.
This is obviously exciting news for Bears fans.
Jay Cutler is, without equivocation, the most talented -- if not best -- quarterback in Bears history. He's a potential perennial Pro Bowler. He has a great arm. He immediately changes the dynamic of the Bears franchise. And he will re-energize a Bears fandom bored by GM Jerry Angelo's occasionally sleepy offseason.
And for what? The Bears got Cutler for a few picks and Kyle Orton. Sure, those picks are valuable, and sure, Kyle Orton gets a bad rap. But it's really, really hard to question the trade; it makes the Bears better in the short and long term, and it's hard to argue with that.
Big trade. Big story. Plenty more analysis to come.
