Soup's Back On: Blackhawks Sign Brian Campbell to 1-Year Contract

Soup's back on in the Windy City, as the Chicago Blackhawks have agreed to a one-year deal with defenseman Brian Campbell

In one of the worst kept secrets in hockey, defenseman Brian Campbell is on his way back to Chicago, as the veteran has agreed to a one-year deal with the Chicago Blackhawks.

Campbell, who signed a seven-year contract with the Blackhawks in 2008 and won a Stanley Cup with the team in 2010 before being traded in the summer of 2011, will make $2 million for the 2016-17 season, and will hope to help solidify a blue line that had serious depth issues last season.

In 82 games with the Florida Panthers last season, Campbell scored six goals and dished out 25 assists, giving the team a valuable offensive weapon on the back end.

Throughout the free agency process, Campbell made it clear that his preference was to return to Chicago, and he certainly showed that by the contracts that he turned down. According to a report from ESPN’s Pierre LeBrun, Campbell turned down a one-year deal from Florida that would have paid him $5 million to return to the Windy City.

Now that he’s back, Campbell will likely take on a second pairing role with the Blackhawks, skating alongside Brent Seabrook. He should also see a healthy amount of power play time for a team that will be looking for new producers from the point, and his offensive prowess should help the team get their transition game going after a dormant and largely fruitless season in that area.
