Former Olympian Looking to Make White Sox Roster

Eddy Alvarez isn’t heading to Pyeongchang to defend his silver medal in speedskating, but the speedster is pursuing another sports team that’s just as cool.

Alvarez, who won a silver medal in the 5000 meter relay in the 2014 Olympics in Sochi, traded in his skate blades for baseball cleats, and is trying to make the Chicago White Sox roster out of spring training this season.

The 27-year-old reached triple-A Charlotte last season, driving in seven runs in 100 at-bats for the Knights. In total, he hit four home runs and drove in 39 RBI in 126 minor league games, and is hoping that he can finally take the next step and achieve his big league dreams.

Alvarez will join the White Sox at their spring training facility in Glendale later this month. The Sox will kick off their schedule on Feb. 23 when they battle the Dodgers at Camelback Ranch.
