Cubs Lose 6th Straight Game as Cardinals Sweep at Wrigley

The Chicago Cubs’ tailspin continued unabated Sunday as they lost to the St. Louis Cardinals and saw their playoff chances dim even further.

The Cubs’ elimination number now stands at just three after their sixth-consecutive loss, as the Milwaukee Brewers now hold a four-game advantage in the National League wild card race.

Yu Darvish pitched into the ninth inning, but he ended up seeing a one-run lead disappear as Jose Martinez hit a lead-off triple and scored on a sacrifice fly by Dexter Fowler. Paul Goldschmidt then hit an RBI double to give the Cardinals a lead they would never relinquish.

Darvish ended up with 12 strikeouts and three earned runs in 8.1 innings, but took the loss as the Cubs’ home schedule came to an end.

Andrew Miller allowed a bloop single to Jason Heyward in the ninth inning, but retired Nico Hoerner for the final out to complete a four-game sweep at Wrigley Field.

Nicholas Castellanos hit yet another home run, his 16th as a member of the Cubs, and was responsible for both Cubs runs in the loss.

After a day off Monday, the Cubs will begin a six-game road trip to wrap up their regular season, with three games with the Pittsburgh Pirates looming at PNC Park.
