Cubs Announce Hires of New Directors of Hitting, Pitching

The Cubs made a slew of player development hires this week as the team reacts to missing the postseason

After missing the postseason for the first time in five seasons, the Chicago Cubs have made some big changes to their baseball operations department, hiring new Directors of Hitting and Pitching.

The Cubs announced a slew of changes and hires in the player development department on Thursday, including transition Matt Dorey into a role as the team’s new Senior Director of Player Development. Dorey had served as the Cubs’ director of amateur scouting for six seasons, and prior to that had served as a national crosschecker in the scouting department.

The Cubs also hired a new Director of Player Development, as Bobby Basham will serve in that role. Basham had been the assistant director of the department for the last two seasons, and has also served as major league scouting coordinator and assistant director of minor league operations.

Former big league pitcher Craig Breslow will also have a new role within the organization as he will serve as the Director of Pitching. Breslow, who pitched in 576 career games, joined the Cubs last year as the Director of Strategic Initiatives for Baseball Operations, and will now be tasked with managing the team’s minor league pitching infrastructure, according to a press release.

The Cubs also have a new Director of Hitting, as Justin Stone will transition into the role. He had previously served as the biokinematic hitting consultant with the team, and has decades of experience in player development and in using technology to aid in instruction.

Stone will lead an overhaul of the team’s minor league hitting infrastructure, and will play an important role in tracking the progress and success of the team’s hitters as they move through the system.

The Cubs also announced that Jeremy Farrell will serve as the Assistant Director of Baseball Development, and Jason Madison will be named a Special Assistant to the General Manager.
