Former Blackhawk Chelios Charged with DUI

Former Blackhawks star Chris Chelios was hit with a DUI charge following a late December traffic stop in west suburban Westmont, police said Tuesday.

Christos K. Chelios, 47, of Bloomfield, Mich., was charged with misdemeanor driving under the influence of alcohol after a Dec. 28 traffic stop, according to Westmont police. He was also ticketed for speeding and improper lane usage.

Police stopped a pickup driven by Chelios at 4:12 a.m. as he was traveling east on Ogden Avenue near Blackhawk Drive, police said.

The pickup was towed from the scene and Chelios was taken to the Westmont Police Dept., where he posted $300 -- 10 percent of a $3,000 bond -- and was released, police said.

A blood alcohol level was not available, police said Tuesday, due to his pending court appearance. Chelios will appear at the DuPage County Courthouse in Wheaton on Feb. 1 on the charge.

Chelios racked up 185 goals, 763 assists and 2,891 penalty minutes as a defenseman with the Montreal Canadiens (1983-90), Blackhawks (1990-99) and Detroit Red Wings (1999-09). He currently plays with the Chicago Wolves of the AHL.
