The Chicago White Sox have inked first round draft pick Jake Burger to a contract, the team announced Wednesday.
The contract will pay Burger, the 11th overall pick in this month’s MLB Draft, a $3.7 million signing bonus, slightly below the $4.1 million slot value that the pick holds, the team announced.
Burger, a third baseman out of Missouri State, drilled 22 home runs and drove in 65 RBI while scoring 69 runs for the Bears this season.
“We are pleased to add Jake’s right-handed power bat to the organization,” White Sox G.M. Rick Hahn said in a statement. “He has a great mix of power and discipline at the plate, and he is a high-character guy who will fit nicely into the organization going forward.”
That White Sox organization has undergone a massive overhaul in the last few months, as the team has assembled one of the best collections of top young talent in the league. Trades landed them top prospects like Yoan Moncada and Lucas Giolito, and they have also dipped into free agency to sign highly coveted Cuban phenom Luis Robert.
