White Sox Lose Slugfest to Tigers in Series Opener

Eloy Jiménez hit his third home run of the season, but it wasn't enough as the White Sox lost

It was a wild back-and-forth affair in the Motor City, but the Detroit Tigers ultimately emerged victorious in a 9-7 triumph over the Chicago White Sox.

Eloy Jiménez blasted his third home run of the season, and Welington Castillo and Ryan Cordell both hit home runs of their own, but it wasn’t enough as the White Sox bullpen couldn’t hold the Tigers at bay in the late innings of the game.

Nick Castellanos and Miguel Cabrera both hit sacrifice flies in the eighth inning that plated a pair of runs, and the White Sox couldn’t erase their two-run deficit as they went on to lose their 10th game of the season.

Grayson Greiner got things off to a quick start for the Tigers as he doubled to deep left field in the second inning to get the Tigers a 1-0 lead. He once again came through in the fourth inning, lacing a single to right to extend that lead to 2-0.

The White Sox jumped out in front thanks to Yolmer Sánchez and Jiménez, who teamed up to drive in three runs in the fifth and sixth innings. Tim Anderson then scored on an error in the sixth inning, making it a 4-2 game.

The Tigers tied things up in the bottom of the sixth, as Niko Goodrum scored on a wild pitch and Dustin Peterson drove in Jeimer Candelario with an RBI single to knot things up at 4-4.

After the Tigers took a 7-5 lead in the bottom of the seventh, the White Sox rebounded in a big way in the eighth, as Castillo blasted a two-run home run to left field, scoring Yonder Alonso and tying the game at 7-7.

Unfortunately for the White Sox they couldn’t keep the Tigers off the board, as Castellanos and Cabrera each hit sacrifice flies in the eighth inning to give the Tigers a two-run lead that they would never relinquish.

The two teams will renew hostilities in Detroit on Friday night, with first pitch scheduled for 6:10 p.m.
