The Chicago White Sox may have their eyes set on a big prize in free agency, but the team could also be looking at another outfielder on the trade market.

According to multiple reports, the White Sox have discussed a trade with the Los Angeles Dodgers that would send outfielder Joc Pederson to the South Side. Fansided’s Jason Kinander originally had the report on Saturday, and The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal also reported it on Sunday, but cautioned that it was unclear where the negotiations were between the two teams.

According to statistics compiled by Sox Machine’s Patrick Nolan, Pederson would provide an instant upgrade to the White Sox offense, as he would have ranked first on the team in slugging, on-base plus slugging, Fangraphs Wins Above Replacement, and several other advanced metrics had he been on the club last season.

Add in the transition to a hitter-friendly ballpark at Guaranteed Rate Field and the departure from a division where he would have to play nearly 20 games in cavernous ballparks like Petco Park and Oracle Park, and there is quite a bit of potential for Pederson if he does come to the South Side.

It’s unclear what the White Sox would have to give up to get Pederson in a trade, but the team still has plenty of time to figure it out, as spring training won’t start for nearly a month.
