Chicago Fire Trade David Accam

The Chicago Fire will be keeping Dax McCarty and Bastian Schweinsteiger in the 2018 season, but one key member of their club will be heading elsewhere.

Winger David Accam has been traded to the Philadelphia Union in exchange for $1.2 million in General and Targeted Allocation Money, the team announced Friday.

Accam, who scored 33 goals in 78 career appearances with the Fire, was a big part of the reason the team made the playoffs last year, scoring 14 goals and dishing out eight assists as Chicago reached the postseason for the first time in five years.

There had been speculation last season that Accam would leave the team, but the Fire picked up his 2018 option and opted not to transfer him before last summer’s deadline. Accam had also had issues with Fire head coach Veljko Paunovic last season, saying he was “disappointed” in the coach for leaving him off the MLS All-Star roster for the game that was played at Chicago’s Soldier Field.
