Chicago Cubs catcher Willson Contreras thought he had hit a home run against the Cincinnati Reds on Sunday, but when the ball didn't clear the wall, social media lit up.
Contreras, who has not hit a home run since Aug. 1, launched a ball to deep center field in the game, and stood at the plate to admire the shot. As he began to make his way down the line, he realized that the ball was not going to clear the wall, and he made it into second base after an errant throw from the outfield:
Predictably, Twitter users, including Cubs manager Joe Maddon's son, quickly posted messages either defending Contreras or criticizing him:
The missed home run unfortunately proved to be a tough blow for the Cubs, who ultimately lost the game to the Reds to end their home stand.
