Chicago Cubs Call Up Chris Gimenez, Demote Caratini

Gimenez was sent to Triple-A Iowa at the beginning of the season

The Chicago Cubs have made an interesting roster move on Saturday, calling up catcher Chris Gimenez from Triple-A Iowa.

Gimenez, who signed with the team during the offseason, was seen as a big contributor to the push to sign pitcher Yu Darvish, but was sent down to the minor leagues to start the campaign. In Triple-A Iowa, he has hit .224 with six doubles and seven RBI so far this season.

Cubs manager Joe Maddon did say that Gimenez will not catch Darvish in his scheduled start Sunday, but did not rule out making that move later in the season.

In a corresponding roster move, the Cubs sent down catcher Victor Caratini, making Gimenez the team’s back-up to Willson Contreras.

In one final move, the Cubs designated Efren Navarro for assignment to make room for Gimenez on the 40-man roster.

The Cubs will next take the field on Saturday night when they welcome the San Francisco Giants to Wrigley Field.
