It was a big day for the Chicago Cubs as they held their home opener in spring training action, and Anthony Rizzo and Willson Contreras are already swinging hot bats.

Both players were making their spring debuts for the Cubs as they took on the Texas Rangers at Mesa’s Sloan Park. After the Rangers struck first in the second inning, the Cubs responded with six unanswered runs as they cruised to a 6-1 win.

In the fourth inning of the game, Rizzo fouled a ball off his foot. After walking off the sting, he promptly unloaded on a two-run opposite field home run to give the Cubs a 2-1 lead.

Contreras followed that up with a solo home run of his own to left field, giving the Cubs a lead that they would never relinquish.

The Cubs would later tack on three insurance runs thanks to a throwing error, an infield single by Chris Gimenez, and a fielder’s choice by Charcer Burks to get their first win of the spring slate.

News and Notes:

-Ben Zobrist is still a few days away from activity as he deals with tightness in his back. Zobrist told media in Arizona that he isn’t worried about his status for the start of the season, and that he expects to get plenty of at-bats this spring.

-Albert Almora Jr. got the start in the lead-off spot for the Cubs as they look to get that situation sorted out this spring. Unfortunately for him he went 0-for-2 with a strikeout before being replaced by Mark Zagunis.

-Javier Baez, batting seventh for the Cubs, went 1-for-2 with a triple in the game.

What’s Next:

After the Cubs play the Giants on Sunday, they will unleash their starting pitchers as the new week begins. Tyler Chatwood will make his first spring start on Monday, and he will be followed by Jon Lester on Tuesday and Kyle Hendricks on Wednesday.

Free agent acquisition Yu Darvish will make his spring debut for the Cubs on Thursday when they take on the Colorado Rockies.
